Firefighters and interested locals descend upon the crushed remains of the Kingsway-Lambton fire truck lost during the night. The five volunteers who manned this truck, responding to a report of stranded motorists, were lost when flood water first encircled then swallowed the truck. Clarence “Tiny” Collins, Frank Mercer, Roy Oliver, Dave Palmateer, and Angus Small have long been celebrated as heroes of the storm.

Jim Britton was snagged by a tree. Nearby, Frank Mercer called weakly for help. A human chain could not reach him in time, and he was swept away. Police rescued Britton and Jack Phillips. Marsh Palmateer managed to swim to shore. Frank Mercer and the remaining four — Clarence Collins, Roy Oliver, Dave Palmateer, and Angus Small — were lost. The next day the truck was found several hundred feet south near the parking lot of the Old Mill Restaurant, crushed, the ladder ripped away.

As the tragedy of the Kingsway-Lambton fire crew unfolded, other rescue operations continued.
